This Week I Will Start a Blog

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step.

That’s what I finally told myself when I decided I needed to do more for our planet. I go between feeling that I already do more than most Americans and feeling overwhelmed by everything that still needs to be done – by all of us. So I decided I would take one small step at a time. And see how many others I could get to join me. My plan is to pick one aspect of sustainable living and environmental responsibility each week and try it on for size. This week I started a blog. If you read the blog this week and plan to try some of the suggestions in future weeks, then we will have taken the first step.I will research and present a problem, like the huge mass of plastic debris floating in our oceans or the enormous methane emissions associated with large scale cattle production, and something I will do about it that week. I know that some solutions will be easier than others, but the idea is to give it all a try. My hope is that as a community full of good intentions and ideas we can heal our planet together.

“Tikkun Olam” means, in its most basic form, repairing the world. It is an ancient term from long before we worried about carbon emissions or mercury in our fish. It promotes the idea that we are the stewards of our planet and we that must be constant and vigilant in our responsibility. And not only must we take care of the Earth and seas and creatures, but we have to fix what is broken. And this is our job for as long as we are
on this planet.

One last note:
I really, really want feedback. What’s interesting, boring, what works, what doesn’t. I have no background as an environmentalist or activist so I will be on a steep learning curve. I will appreciate all input.
